How does The Nutcracker and the Four Realms compare to the traditional Nutcracker ballet?
The story of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is so significantly different from The Nutcracker the ballet that it is almost impossible to compare the two. The only real similarity between the two is the main heroine Clara. She is presented as a strong female character who is witty and clever in both stories. Other than the main character Clara and some similarities in music, most of the other characters have different personalities and roles in the movie than in the ballet. For dancers who are used to watching the ballet every Christmas, this movie may be a bit odd to watch. However, if you keep an open mind and try to not compare it to the ballet, this movie will keep you guessing and get you into the Christmas spirit.
Misty Copeland makes a special appearance
Misty Copeland who made history as the first African American female principle dancer to perform with the American Ballet Theatre, makes an appearance in The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. She performs for Clara to tell the story of how Clara's mother became the queen of the four realms. When asked about this role, Copeland states "Everyone knows the Nutcracker ballet story, but this new version of Clara and her journey is just so different. I never imagined I would be a part of a film of this magnitude. It's really just a dream come true,The Nutcracker is such a big part of my art form."
